Gabriel Prokofiev may be the grandson of Sergei, but he’s pure English nonetheless, born in London and trained at Birmingham and York Universities. However, according to his Wikipedia entry, he “eschewed classical music for electronica, and became a composer of garage music and producer of Dance, Electro & Hip-hop music under a variety of guises”. On the basis of the only piece of his that I’ve heard, Bogle Move, a short, reggae-inspired work for string quartet played by The Smith Quartet in their “Dance” CD (2011), too bad: it’s one of the best pieces on that recital, because it is one of those that metabolize their dance- or world-music source into a fully contemporary language. I’m looking forward to hearing more music by Sergei’s grandson.
