I’m no specialist of the Flamenco guitar – I bought the CD out of a collector’s interest for the label, Mercury -, so this is a layman’s opinion. Very enjoyable music and disc, TT 63:48, recordings made in April 1962 and they sound great, with exceptional care given to the transfers, I don’t hear any tape hiss even in the soft passages.
The CD collates the complete contents of Mercury SR90297, “Flamenco” (according to the liner notes, Pepe’s first solo LP – link will open new tab to listing on Discogs.com), and three tracks from SR 90295,
“The Royal Family of the Spanish Guitar”, an LP which had all four Romeros playing Spanish guitar music – and here, on the CD, papa Celedonio joins Pepe in Granados’ Spanish Dance No. 6, and brother Angel in Sinopoli’s Vidalita. In fact, as enjoyable and often exciting as the Flamenco pieces may be, I almost prefer those last three (which include Tarrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra). They are lovely, Spanish nostalgic. In fact, I liked them so much that I am about to click on the “buy” icon for Mercury Living Presence 44 385-2 “The Romeros – The Royal Family of the Spanish Guitar”. Done. And look at the price, too! Great liner notes also, “adapted from notes by Igor Kipnis” the great harpsichordist, very informative on the history and techniques of the Flamenco, and with precise descriptions of each piece. Pity the deaf who find this CD boring – but, hey, maybe they know so much more than us lay people.
