Allain Gaussin (1943)

Allain Gaussin, a composition student of Messiaen at the Paris Conservatoire, is a vey minor figure among French contemporary composers, as far as notoriety and recorded representation are concerned. Yet among the four pieces represented on the CD of the Arditti Quartet and Trio Le Cercle on Disques Montaigne (the other composers being Aperghis, Mâche and Xenakis), his String Quartet, Chakra, is the one I prefer.

The Arditti Quartet Edition: Arditti String Quartet & Trio Le Cercle play Compositions for String Quartet & Percussion Trio by Georges Aperghis, François-Bernard Mâche, Iannis Xenakis, Allain Gaussin. Disques Montaigne 782002 (1991)
