Alan Feinberg

Four interesting CDs recorded for Argo in the early 1990s – they promise more than they deliver, but what they deliver is enjoyable nonetheless:

The American Romantic (works of Amy Beach, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Robert Helps). Argo 430 330-2 (1990)

The American Virtuoso (works of Edward MacDowell, Percy Grainger, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Amy Beach, Teresa Carreño, arrangements and transcriptions by Grainger and Wodehouse). Argo 436 121-2 (1992), Argo D 101530

The American Innovator (works by Leo Ornstein, John Adams, Ruth Crawford-Seeger, Henry Cowell, Mario Davidovsky, John Harbison, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Milton Babbitt, Conlon Nancarrow, John Cage, Charles Ives, Ralph Shapey, Thelonius Monk). Argo 436 925-2 (1993)

Fascinatin’ Rhythm (works of George Gershwin, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, James P. Johnson, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Rube Bloom, Henry Cowell, Conlon Nancarrow, Bud Powell, Bix Beiderbecke, Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin, Ignacio Cervantes, Percy Grainger, Zez Confrey). Argo 444 457-2 (1995), Argo D 108657 (1995)

I haven’t been able to find online Feinberg’s birthyear. Having graduated from Juilliard in 1973, I’d say early to mid-1950s. An interesting interview of Feinberg here, in which he recounts, among other things, how these CDs for Argo came into being.
